Teaching students speaking in a foreign language can be difficult since it has to be as authentic as possible. Role-play is a technique to teach students to speak with the context-based on real life. The study aims to find out whether or not there is any significant difference in speaking achievement between students who are taught by using scripted role play and those taught by using unscripted role play of the eleventh grade students of SMKN 4 Banjarmasin in the academic year of 2019/2020. Therefore, the researcher employed a quasi-experimental study, and the subjects of this research are 65 students. In collecting data, the researcher used a speaking achievement test and observation. The t-test calculation from both classes showed that the significant value (2 tailed) was 0.886. It is higher than 0.05 (the significance level of the study) which means that there is no significant difference between the post-test results in the experimental class and the control class. The possible reasons were because the treatment was quite new, the students were lack of vocabulary, and the treatment was only given in 3 meetings. Therefore, it is suggested to English teachers to use either scripted or unscripted role play as the alternative techniques especially in teaching and learning speaking to help students improve their vocabulary and the ability in performing a role play of a real-life situation.
