This research aims to find out the implementation process of teaching vocabulary through reading at the eighth grade students of MTs AL-HAMID Banjarmasin in academic year 2016/2017. This research used a descriptive and qualitative method. The sample of this research was 1 English Teacher. The data were gathered through observation, and interview.

The result of the research showed that the teaching technique used by the teacher are asking the students to read the text, finding the meaning of unfamiliar words, and asking the students to answer the questions based on the text. Furthermore, the material used by the teacher is English on The Sky by ERLANGGA and LKS Bahasa Inggris Standar KTSP untuk SMP published by Kindai Media, Solo. The teacher often used whiteboard and LCD sometimes because she doesn’t have enough time to prepare teaching media.

Finally, it is suggested to teachers to apply various kinds of techniques such as explanation, definition, antonyms, synonyms, and also suggested to the teacher to use additional materials from other sources like magazine, newspaper, or internet and to use various media such as pictures, realia, and other media in teaching vocabulary through reading.
