            The lack of knowledge in English in SMP Negeri 9 Banjarbaru was experienced by the students because they were not given English class or course in the elementary school. Finding out the students’ language anxiety level will help the teacher to improve the teaching technique in the classroom to reduce students’ anxiety in learning English.

            The objective of this research is to find out the students’ language anxiety level in junior high school in SMP Negeri 9 Banjarbaru. This research uses descriptive and qualitative method. The subject of this research is the students of ninth grade class in SMP Negeri 9 Banjarbaru. Questionnaire and interview are used as a tool to collect the data.

            Findings on the data showed that students of ninth grade class had low anxiety level. The students were less afraid, nervous, and confused every time they had English class. Teachers need to build more active drills in speaking, listening, writing and reading skill to build students’ confidence.
