Writing is an important skill for language production. However, it is a complex skill to master, especially for high school students. Therefore, this research was conducted to investigate and describe the ability of tenth-grade students of SMA Kristen Kanaan Banjarmasin in writing descriptive text.

This research was conducted by using qualitative approach. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the students of tenth grade of SMA Kriten Kanaan Banjarmasin. There were 29 students from class X MIA. In obtaining the data, the researcher used writing test as the research instrument.

Based on the result of the test, it could be seen that the ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Kristen Kanaan Banjarmasin in writing descriptive text was fair. It showed that most students were unable to elaborate their paragraph and develop the topic adequately.
