Reading is one of the English skills that should be taught at school as central of the learning process and it is considered as one of the most important skills. Through reading, students can develop the other language skills such as writing. The aim of this research was to find out the correlation between the students’ reading mastery and the students’ writing narrative text.

The research used correlative method. The variables of this research were students’ reading mastery and students’ writing narrative text. The researcher used cluster sampling with 30 second grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Tanta as the total sample, the instrument used was reading test and writing test. To analyze the data, the researcher used Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0 windows.

The result of this study showed that the coefficient correlation between the two variables was 0.408. It could be interpreted that there was a positive moderate correlation between students’ reading mastery and students’ writing narrative text. The result of this study also showed that the students could recognize the components of narrative text in recognize test (reading test) and could produce the correct sentences to write the text in productive test (writing test).

It is suggested that the students need to study and practice more to improve their reading mastery and their writing ability in narrative text. It is also suggested to other researchers who are interested in the same topic to use more various instruments to conduct the research.
