Keyword: Speaking skill, media, stick puppet, picture Speaking skill is a means through which students can communicate to others to express their ideas, feelings, opinions, thoughts and hope fluently and meaningfully or to achieve certain goals. However, the students often face the difficulties in speaking English; they were shy and they preferred remaining quiet in the class, they were afraid for doing incorrect speaking. It is essential for English teachers to encourage the students to speak , the teachers must be able to find the way to teach speaking appropriately. Media is a tool for language teaching and learning that gives contribution in the learning process of the students, and by using the media, students can be more motivated and active in the class. Therefore, in this study the researcher uses the stick puppet and picture to find out the effect of the media in students’ speaking achievement. The aims of this study are to find out whether there is any significant effect in students’ speaking achievement between the students who are taught by using stick puppet and picture and those who are taught only by using picture and to describe the process of teaching and learning English in the class which is taught by using stick puppet and picture at seventh grade in SMP Negeri 1 Martapura. The researcher uses mixed method design. The result of this researcher shows that the stick puppet and picture give effect in students’ speaking achievement. The average score of pre-test of control group was 58.54 and the average score of pre-test of experimental group was 58.23, after giving treatment three times, the average score of the post-test of control group was 83.55 and the average score of post-test of experimental group was 91.16. The t-test or t-value obtained is 5.156, Since t-test is higher than t-table which is 2.000, therefore the hypothesis is accepted. It means that there is any significant difference in students’ speaking achievement between students who were taught by using stick puppet and picture than those who were taught by using only pictures. Based on the result above, the stick puppets and pictures were more effective for teaching speaking.
