Teaching listening is the active process of receiving and responding to spoken where is the teacher as the speaker and the student as the listener in process direct learning listening. Specifically in teaching, problems could be defined as the obstacles found in a process or activity of teaching and learning. In this research, the researcher analyzes teacher’s problems in teaching listening. This research aims to find out and describe the problems of teaching listening to the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 26 Banjarmasin in academic year of 2017/2018.
The research used case study and the approach was qualitative research. The data were collected by using the observation sheet, interview form and documentation. The subject of this research was an English teacher.
The result showed that there were some problems in teaching listening to seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 26 Banjarmasin, as follows: 1) Problems related to insufficient time. 2) Problems related to the speaker’s or teacher’s pronunciation. 3) Problems related to the failure to concentrate. 4) Problems related to mentioning learning objective.
This research suggests that the teacher should use the appropriate method, technique, strategy and media of teaching based on the learning objective in order to the teaching and learning process can run well.
