This study describes the problems in teaching writing narrative text processes at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 4 Banjarmasin. Teaching writing narrative text is a functional text that has to be taught at the eighth grade of Junior High School in English lesson.

 

This research used descriptive qualitative method. The instruments used in collecting data are interview, questionnaire and observation. These instruments are used to describe the problems in teaching writing narrative text at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Banjarmasin. This research focused on the teacher’s role, syllabus, method, material and media. The subject of this research is the English teacher of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Banjarmasin.

 

The research finding based on the data above shows that the teachers cannot find suitable method and media in teaching writing narrative text. The use of media in teaching writing is very limited, not effective and not intensive in the classroom.

 

Based on the research finding, the researcher suggests that the English teachers can use various kinds of media, choose a suitable method with students’ competence and giving more guidance to the students in teaching writing narrative text.
