This thesis aimed to describe the students’ ability in writing procedure
text. The subject of this research is the students of Junior High School 9
Banjarmasin especially the ninth-grade students in the academic year of
2016/2017. This research uses a descriptive method. The instrument used in
collecting data is a test that is writing test with total number of population are 252
students divided into eight classes but the researcher took two classes they are
IXG and IXH which have 72 of students. In this research, the sample was
determined using cluster random sampling.
This research is conducted by using qualitative approach in analyzing the
data. The result of the research shows that the students ability in writing procedure
text is good. Based on the category that used, the data shows that the students’
ability in writing procedure text, as follows: 24 students (33%), were classified
into excellent category. Then, 42 students (58%) got good category. There were 4
students (6%) classified into fair category and 2 students (3%) who got poor
category and there was no student who got very poor category. Based on the
result, it can be concluded that the ability of students in writing procedure text
stated as “good” category.
The researcher suggest that teachers should give more guidance how to
use the component of writing, especially in grammar and mechanics correctly and
accurately.
