This research make it different from other research because it covers more than one aspect and the researcher try to see it from different points of view. This way makes the findings of this research vary. In order to get more in depth data about students’ difficulties and the factors affecting their difficulties in learning to speak English, a face to face individual interview was conducted in this research.

The researcher used a qualitative approach with the descriptive method. The subjects of this study were 5 students of XI IPS 1 from SMAN 6 Banjarmasin. The researcher used observation, interview and documentation in collecting the data. The researcher used three major phases of the data analysis. They were data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification.

From the data analysis, the researcher found some difficulties in learning speaking encountered by the students at SMAN 6 Banjarmasin and the factors affecting their difficulties. First, the students’ difficulties in learning speaking English were divided into linguistic and non-linguistic difficulties. There are some linguistics difficulties encountered by the students in learning to speak English, such as lack of vocabulary, lack of grammar and pronunciation. While, non-linguistics difficulties encountered by the students in learning to speak English were inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation and mother tongue use. Second, the factors affecting their difficulties in speaking English were lack of practice, lack of speaking components which made them less confident, students’ regard English as a difficult subject to learn, lack of support to use English, cognitive styles and lack of motivation to learn English (extrinsic and intrinsic motivation).

It is suggested for the students to enjoy music, listen to news bulletins, watch movies in English, and pay attention to new vocabulary and pronunciation. They can also learn new words, sentence arrangements and expressions this way. It is also suggested for the students to use technology. The students may use their smartphoneto record themselves speaking then listen back to see how their English sounds to other people and use their favourite productivity apps to organise their practice time and make a note of all the new words they learn.
