The objective of this research is to find out the dominant grammatical errors made in writing recount text by 2015 batch students of English Department of Lambung Mangkurat University in the academic year of 2016/2017. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The sample of this research is 2015 batch students of English Department who are taking Writing III Class. The class is chosen by using cluster random sampling.
In obtaining the data, the researcher used writing test as the research instrument. Based on the result of the test, it was found that based on the surface strategy taxonomy by Dulay et al (1982) there were four category of errors made by the students in writing recount text. The errors were omission, addition, misformation, and misordering.
Based on the data analysis, 63% of errors made by the students is misformation errors and 13.66% errors is caused by the omission of words. Hence, it can be concluded that the most dominant grammatical errors made by the students are misformation and omission.
Finally, it is suggested to the lecturers to give feedback toward the students’ writing and communicating their progress in writing.
