The purpose of this research of this thesis is to find out the
translation techniques that are applied by Angie Kilbane in translating
Laskar Pelangi into English. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative
study to describe the data. The source of the data of this research is the
novel Laskar Pelangi and The Rainbow Troops. This study is conducted
through the observation of the data source that is in Indonesian Language
and its translation in English to find the data on translation techniques
“Laskar Pelangi” into “The Rainbow Troops”. The research instrument in
this study is the researcher himself who collects the data from the novel:
by reading the novel and its translation taking a note of the data,
classifying, and analyzing them based on the theories which are taken
from some relevant references. The findings of the research show that the
translator uses some techniques of translation. Those are borrowing,
description, discursive creation, established equivalent, generalization,
linguistic amplification, literal translation, modulation, transposition, free
translation, idiomatic translation, amplification, and reduction. From all
the techniques of translation, the most technique that is used by the
translator is literal translation. It can be concluded that the translator
needs to learn all of techniques of translation before translating the
sentences because every sentence cannot be translated using the same
techniques. The researcher also suggestes the lecturer to teach all of the
techniques of translation even though some techniques rarely use in
translating the senteces.
