Lecturers have the responsibility to make their students speak English by using suitable speaking teaching techniques. If lecturers do not urge their students to talk in English, students will automatically use their first language to explain something to their classmates.

 

            This research aimed to find kinds of teaching techniques that are used and mostly used by the lecturers in Basic Speaking classes and factors underlie lecturers’ choice in using certain techniques more often than other techniques in Basic Speaking classes in English Language Education Study program of FKIP ULM. This study used descriptive qualitative as the approach of the research. The three lecturers who taught Basic Speaking classes were selected as subjects of the research. This research used observation and interview as the instrument. The data were analyzed by using qualitative research.  

 

From observation, this  research revealed that the lecturers in Basic Speaking classes used discussion, drilling, role play, game, dialogues, interview, talking stick, listening audio recording, question and answer, and song techniques. In addition, the techniques that are mostly used by the lecturers in teaching speaking in Basic Speaking classes are discussion and role play. From the interview, factors underlie lecturers’ choice in using certain techniques more often than other techniques in Basic Speaking classes are the topics, lesson objectives, lecturer’s need, lecturer’s interest, lecturer’s experiences, and students’ interest.

 

Because this research was conducted until the middle of the semester, two lecturers still have not yet achieved all the lesson objectives. But from the interview, one lecturer said 85% of the purpose of the lesson had been achieved. Based on the result of this research, the researcher suggested to  consider the amount of students and other sources of material except handout when teaching speaking.
