Speaking for early-level students is important for them. By learning, students will know something from the smallest to the largest. Teaching English, especially speaking skill at senior high school need special attention. The teacher has to have a clever strategy to teach it. Therefore, this study investigates the implementation of teaching speaking by an English teacher to the tenth-grade students of SMAIT Ukhuwah Banjarmasin.

This study used descriptive-qualitative research. The researcher took one teacher who taught tenth-grade students as the subject of this study. Meanwhile, another English teacher acted as an observer. The instruments used in this study were an interview guideline and an observation sheet.

The techniques used by the teacher in teaching English speaking skills were role play, discussion, brainstorming, storytelling, story completion, and question-and-answer. The teacher used a puppet, sound speaker, PowerPoint, social media, book, laptop, Zoom application, handsfree, and video as teaching media. The task observed in one meeting was in the form of a Question-and-Answer about a video containing a conversation between two students talking about a historical story.

There are five techniques and nine media that can be used in teaching English speaking skills. Unfortunately, only five students could practice speaking English, and the teacher did not provide equal opportunities between the two classes. The teacher should not only asking students to be active in answering questions but also being active in making questions, and when appointing students to answer questions, the teacher should choose students from class that are less given the opportunity.
