            Writing is considered to be a difficult and complicated skill because it involves several components that need to be considered.  There are many kinds of writing: paragraphs, essays, etc. Each of them has their characteristics. They are written for different purposes depending on the writer himself. There are four types of paragraph: narrative paragraph, descriptive paragraph, expository paragraph, and argumentation paragraph. Therefore, the research was about the problems faced by the students in writing narrative paragraphs.

            The researcher employed descriptive qualitative study.The subjects of the research were the students who are taking Advanced Writing (A4). Research data was collected by questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire result shows that there are 4 kinds of students who are having problems in writing narrative paragraphs which are always (1.2%), often (4.96%), sometimes (8.4%), and never (0.48%). In addition, the interview shows in the complication’s step, there are problems in deciding the conflict. In the orientation step there is no problem because this step is considered easy by the students. Moreover, the same thing happened in resolution, because the students already decided the conflict of the story. Some of the students admitted their lack of vocabulary. The students admitted they are having problems using different forms of past tense similarly the continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous tense. Furthermore, the students have problems in developing the idea because they are confused on what to write as the effect of the lack of vocabulary.

It can be concluded that there are problems the students have in the vocabulary, it makes the students difficult to write narrative paragraphs. The students have problems in writing narrative paragraphs with incorrect grammar, and when using the past tense multiple forms in the correct situation. The students' problems in developing ideas especially in the middle of paragraphs (complication) until finishing in writing a narrative paragraph (resolution). Then the students feel confused when deciding the conflict in the complication step. It makes the students get problems in developing ideas in writing narrative paragraphs.
