            Writing is an essential skill in language learning. In English, there are four kinds of writing: narrative, descriptive, expository, and argumentative text. Descriptive text is a type of text which describes something. This research is aimed to find out the correlation between students’ English vocabulary mastery and their writing ability in descriptive text. The population are 80 students and the samples are 16 students from the third semester at English Language Education Study Program of Lambung Mangkurat University which are taking Intermediate Writing class.

This research used descriptive and correlational analysis. The instruments to collect the data were tests on vocabulary mastery in multiple choice form and test on writing descriptive text. Each of the data collected was classified based on the result of the achievement test and then analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment correlation.

The findings of this research reveal that there is a significant correlation between the two variables. The analysis on the test results showed that both the mean of the vocabulary mastery test and writing ability test is 73. The coefficient correlation (rxy) is 0.679 which is included in the scale of r interpretation score between 0.600-0.800. Based on the results, it indicates that there is a positive and significant correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and their writing descriptive text ability. Thus, based on the result, it is suggested to other researchers to investigate the effect of vocabulary mastery on other skills in English anduse other research designs tomake more detailed research.
