Elicitation technique is a technique used by teachers to build students’ participation in teaching English. The elicitation technique is a techniquetolurethestudentsintheclassroom. The researcher had witnessed that the teachers had used elicitation techniques to engage students with the lesson. Therefore, the researcher was eager to find whether the teacher use the elicitation techniques based on Doff’s theory. For this reason, the researcher intended to explore more about the elicitation techniques that used by teachers of SMK N 2 Banjarmasin based on Doff’s theory

Thisresearch isadescriptive studyaimedto look atthetypeofelicitationisusedbytwoEnglishteachers in SMK N 2 Banjarmasin. This research focused on TKJ and DI classes. Data collection techniques used in this research were the observation and interview. Both instruments were used to see the type of elicitation techniques which was used by teachers in SMK N 2 Banjarmasin. The first thingtodowasobservingteachersintheclassroom.Then,analyzingdatato find elicitation techniques used by teachers based on Doff’s theory.

From theresults, it wasfoundthatteachersinSMKN2Banjarmasinhadusedelicitation techniques in teaching learning process. Elicitation techniques that used by the teacher 1 at SMKN 2 Banjarmasin are ‘Asking questions with pictures’ and ‘Asking questions with a dialog or text’. Elicitation techniques used by teacher 2 were ‘Asking with non-verbal language’, ‘Asking question with picture’ and ‘Asking question with dialogue or text’. Asking question only and Asking question combined with games or activities was not used both teachers at all.

 

It is concluded that elicitation techniques used by both teachers who were observed at SMKN 2 Banjarmasin are ‘asking questions with pictures’ and ‘asking questions with dialog or text’. It is suggested for the teacher to combine two or more elicitation techniques in teaching, because it will open opportunity for the teachers to experiment the combination of techniques which is suitable for them. It is also suggested for other researchers to make other researches that focus on a particular elicitation technique on a particularsituation.
