Teaching means to give (someone) knowledge or to instruct or train (someone). Speaking can be defined as the ability to pronounce sound articulation or to express the words, thoughts, ideas or feeling by using verbal language. Teaching speaking for showing or helping someone to learn how to do something, giving instructions, guiding in the study of something, providing knowledge, causing you to know or understand. This research aimed to describe the teaching speaking skills at the eleventh grade of SMAN 11 Banjarmasin.

A descriptive design was used in this research mixed-method because it applies qualitative and quantitative approaches. The researcher took the research subjects from two classes that were XI MIPA 1 and XI MIPA 2 and one English teacher. This research used a questionnaire consisting of 15 items divided into four types of questions which were teaching material, teaching media, teaching method, and teaching techniques. The research also used interviews with the teacher to confirm the questionnaire results.

The findings revealed that the teacher used direct method and total physical response in teaching speaking. Sometimes the teacher used a silent way when teaching speaking. The teaching techniques used by the teacher were question and answer. The teaching materials used by the teacher were the materials from an English textbook that had been set by the school. Finally, the teaching media used by the teacher were pictures and computers. The choice of teaching method, techniques, material and media to see the progress of students when the teacher teaches speaking English in the class. Therefore, it is suggested to the teacher to maintain the guided learning in teaching speaking and to make sure that technique, method, material and media can make students like learning English. It is suggested to the students to encourage interest and motivation in learning English speaking skills. Finally, it is suggested to other researchers to investigate more about teaching speaking in other high schools pertaining to students’ problems, speaking anxiety level, and techniques to overcome the students’ problems.
