This research aimed at investigating the factors that cause students’ anxiety to speak in English.The researcher interested to conduct this research because of several experiences at Lambung Magkurat University related to many English Language Education students in Faculty of Teacher Training and Education who were afraid or anxious to speak English.

This research was descriptive quantitative and qualitative. It involves English Language Education Study Program of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in Lambung Mangkurat Uiversity students in batch 2018 as the populations. 50 randomly selected respondents have participated as the samples out of 96 students.The instrument of this research was used two questionnaires to collect the data. Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) has been used to categorize the participants’ anxiety level.It was found that 22 students in total based on anxious and very anxious level. Those 22 students became the focus of this research in order to respond to an open-ended questionnaire.

The result of quantitative research showed that Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE) influenced 70,77% students, Communication Apprehension (CA) influenced 67% students and Test Anxiety (TA) influenced 64,9% students in speaking English anxiety. As for the qualitative research, the factors that cause the students to be anxious in speaking English because of the pressure in facing the lecturers; lack of grammar mastery; lack of vocabulary; negative thoughts; afraid of judgement; afraid of making mistakes; afraid of failure; less of preparation; and lack of confidence.

It is suggested for the students to train themselves in English and practice their abilities so that their confidence level becomes higher as well as other abilities. It is also suggested for the lecturers to build good connection to the students in order to help the students in maintain their speaking English anxiety.
