This research is to find out whether there is any correlation between the students’ ability in simple past tense and writing recount text of English Language Education Study Program students batch 2019, FKIP ULM Banjarmasin. The sample of this research was 27 students. This research used test to collect the data, such as simple past tense and writing recount text test. The test consisted of 50 items fill in the blank and 1 item written test. The data collected were analyzed by using SPSS.

The result of this research was there is no correlation between the students’ ability in simple past tense and their writing recount text with the coefficient 0.332, it is between 0.21-0.40. It meant that the correlation between students’ ability in simple past tense and writing recount text is low, and the significance value is 0.09, which is higher than 0.05 means the variable has no correlation.

Based on the findings, the researcher suggested the students to learn more about grammar and they need to improve their ability in writing especially in writing recount text. The lecturers could motivate the students to learn more about grammar and writing. For other researchers, this study can be a reference to conduct further research on similar field.
