In teaching and learning English as a foreign language, there is one important factor that influences it, that is interest. Interest is very important for students because it can make them enthusiastic and totally in learning something. So, they need something interesting in the teaching and learning process.
This research makes it different from other research because from the previous research mostly conducted at junior or senior high school but here the researcher did this research at vocational high school . So the researcher tries to do it from different point of view. This study aims to find out the correlation between students’ interest in English and their learning achievement at SMKN 4 Banjarmasin.
This research used correlation quantitative research because the writer tried to calculate the questionnaire . The subject of this study were 30 students in the second grade students of SMKN 4 Banjarmasin. The techniques used to collect the data are observation and questionnaire. The researcher used pearson product moment for the data analysis.
The finding of this research is the students’ interest could influence their achievement. Students who have high interest try to pursue knowledge more than those who have the low one. They also learn English in the school and also out of the school. They look enjoy and ready to do any task given by the teacher.
It is suggested that a teacher who teaches English has to manage the classroom to help the students interest to the lesson, have to be well prepared in teaching and learning and give a good and clear explanation about the lesson. For the students, they have to realize their learning goals. And parents should provide good conditions at home, and observe their children about their lessons.
