Writing is not easy for students in junior high school. Therefore, picture sequences are proposed as teaching and learning activities, especially in teaching writing.  This research is aimed to analyze whether there is any difference in students' achievement of writing recount text who are taught using picture sequences and those who are taught by using individual picture of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Sungai Loban in the academic year 2021/2022.

This research used a quasi-experimental design with a quantitative approach. The sample of this research was students of two classes in VIII B and VIII C by using random cluster sampling. The data were collected by using an achievement test. The analysis was done by comparing the post-test scores between the experimental and control class.

From the data findings, the pre-test and post-test results of the experimental class are 69.65 and 75.58 with difference 5.93. Based on the testing hypothesis, it was found that the t-test was higher than the t-table (13.516 > 1.673) at the significance level of 0.05. Therefore, it can be said that there is a difference in students' achievement in writing recount text which is taught using picture sequences and those who are by using an individual picture. They were seen from the first element, Orientation; students can introduce characters, time, and place well. In the second element, students can tell various events sequentially at the event. In the last element, re-orientation, students can close a story well and add an impression at the end of their story.

Based on the experience on the field, the researcher suggested for the English teacher use picture sequences to teach 8th-grade students in writing recount text because it makes the teaching and learning process run well. For the students are more practised the media as a tool to write appropriate text and motivated them in writing. For other researchers, it is recommended to find out how effective picture sequences can be applied in teaching writing because it may also be helpful to have research different students’ conditions like students’ habits or interests.
