Employing positive politeness strategy has proven effective to create good interaction between lecturers and students. This research discusses the politeness strategy employed during teaching and learning context. This research aims to discover the types of positive politeness strategies employed by the types of the positive politeness strategies that used by English Language Education Study Program lecturers during communication in classroom context and to elaborate on the most frequent one. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this research were two English Language Education Study Program lecturers who taught Intensive English classes. To obtain the data, the researcher employed observations and interviews. Furthermore, Brown and Levinson’s theory of positive politeness strategy was used to analyze the data.

The analysis result showed that the lecturers employed seven types of positive politeness strategies. The strategies were Strategy 2: Exaggerate (interest, approval, sympathy with Hearer); Strategy 5: Seek Agreement; Strategy 6: Avoid Disagreement; Strategy 8: Joke; Strategy 9: Assert speaker’s knowledge of hearer’s wants; Strategy 10: Offer, Promise; and Strategy 12: Include both Speaker and Hearer in the activity. During the observations, the most frequently uttered strategy was Exaggerate. It was followed by Seek Agreement and Include both Speaker and Hearer in the activity. According to both lecturers in the interview, these strategies were employed during the teaching-learning process in order to gain the students’ attention and to encourage them to participate actively in the class. Therefore, the use of positive politeness strategy is suggested for the lecturer.
