Writing is the one of four important skills in learning a language. Writing cannot be separated or isolated from oral language and reading. And writing is essential in a college. This research aims to find out problems of English Department students in writing a descriptive paragraph.
The research method was descriptive qualitative and the population of this research were students of English department who took writing III in academic year 2016-2017 during the fourth semester. Based on writing test, the overall problems in this research were concluding sentence and transition signals since they had occurred in the writing test. Moreover, there were other problems such as minor grammatical errors, undeveloped paragraph, and unclear structural parts of the paragraph. The questionnaire showed that the students actually know how to write a good characteristic of descriptive paragraph.
The students who have problems in writing descriptive paragraph are suggested to write often and read some literacy book to enrich their vocabulary and improve their grammatical skill in writing. The students’ are suggested to pay attention to their writing and try to focus the writing subject and to conclude the paragraph so the flow of the writing can be easily understand.
