The emergence of google translate makes it easier for the translation process, especially for English students who always use English both as the language of instruction and lecture activities. However, unfortunately, this convenience allows them to question their language skills or linguistic competence. This phenomenon was demonstrated by previous research towards ELESP students’ attitudes on google translate. Therefore, this research aims to investigate students' linguistic competence and performance in translation. This investigation began based on the problem of students' attachment using google translate which vague their linguistic competence even though they were ELESP students.

In need of analysis, the researchers used a quantitative approach. The participants were 53 students of ELESP students that have taken translation courses which determined by using random sampling technique. The instrument used in this research is test. The result of the research showed that 39,7% were classified as good, 49% fairly good, 7.6% fair and 3.8% poor on the linguistic competence test. Meanwhile, in the translation task (51%) it is classified as excellent, (35.8%) good, (13.2%) poor. Moreover, there is a positive correlation coefficient between linguistic competence and students’ translation work. It means that if linguistic competence goes up, students’ translation ability also goes up. Besides, if linguistic competence goes down, students’ translation ability also will go down. In conclusion, the majority scores level of students are classified fairly good. In addition, students’ linguistic competence and performance influenced their translation as much as 25,8%.
