This research was aimed to find the problems do the students of English
department of FKIP ULM Banjarmasin batch 2013 have in translating report text
into Indonesia. This research used qualitative approach and descriptive method.
The population was 137 students and the samples were 54 students taken by
using random sampling.
The researcher collected the data by using test-retest and using
interviews. The answer of test and interviews results were arranged and reviewed
systematically. The researcher put the problems of translation namely ambiguity,
lexical mismatches, and multiword units, faced by the students into several
description and tables.
The researcher found that students’ problems have in translating report
text into Indonesian. The lexical mismatches as much as 62.03% with high
frequency. The ambiguity which took as much as 23.14% with low frequency.
The multiword units which took as much as 14.82% with very low frequency.
Based on the research findings, it is recommended that the students who
translate a scientific text should be very proficient in both the source and target
languages. Mastery of the source language ensures that the meaning conveyed by
the source text author is very clearly and accurately understood by the translator.
However, the teachers must give more activities and kinds of text on translation
class. It is necessary for students to enhance the quality of students’ translation,
so the teacher easier to find the problem and evaluate the difficulties that the
students’ face.
