KWL is a reading comprehension strategy that uses three reading steps: K stands for Know, W stands for What You Want to Know, and L stands for What You Learned. The KWL strategy gives students goals and provided an active role for students during the teaching and learning process. The researcher chose SMP Negeri 8 Pelaihari because this school has been implementing the KWL Strategy. This study aims to find the implementation of KWL strategy in teaching reading comprehension at the Eighth grade of SMP Negeri 8 Pelaihari.

This study used a descriptive design with a qualitative approach. The participants of this research are the English teacher and students of the eighth grade. The researcher used observation, interview, and documentation to find out deeper information about how the implementation of KWL strategy in teaching reading comprehension.

Based on the results of this research the implementation of KWL strategy in teaching reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 8 Pelaihari the teacher and students have implemented the KWL strategy. The students implemented step Know in pre-activity by elicited the background knowledge and asked what they know based on knowledge and experience related to the topic. The students implemented step Want by making questions related to topics and students also predict the answers to the questions they make. Then, students implemented the steps learned by the teacher given the information that has been obtained to compare their prior knowledge with the information they already know and make a summary of the reading.
