English language learners must be aware of the cultural context of the language they are learning. This chapter attempts to analyze how language use is influenced by context and how language use can reflect broader social, political, and cultural dynamics. The social status and roles of a speaker can have a significant impact on their language use. The influence can be seen in vocabulary and syntax, pronunciation and accent, nonverbal communication, and politeness. In relation to sociocultural aspects, language plays a central role in the construction of social and can be used to construct and express other aspects of identity.
