This research is conducted to investigate students’ need analysis of English supplementary materials based on wetlands and Banjarese local wisdom. Students in Banjarmasin usually study with contents of the materials that are not closely related to their lives. On the other hand, studying with authentic content that they can use and see in daily lives is important, especially in learning speaking skill. Banjarese local wisdom and wetlands are the context that the students can use to learn English speaking skill, so that it can be more applicable as it is closely related to their lives and surroundings. Other than providing better context and materials, wetlands and local wisdom is needed to be taught for the students since the ever-fast-changing development in technology and buildings in Banjarmasin that happened these years affected the live of the people in Banjarmasin. The recent catastrophe that happened due to the ignorance of wetlands and local wisdom was major flooding in the early 2021.

 

This research is qualitative research. The instruments used are questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire was spread to the students first before conducting the interview. The criteria of the students is eleventh-grade high school students who learn English as foreign language in their formal public school in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan There were 100 students from three classes in three different schools that participated in the questionnaire, and 15 students participated in the interviews. The data obtained was analyzed to find the eleventh-grade students’ needs of the supplementary materials.

 

The finding of the research shows that students need supplementary materials to learn English speaking skills, especially based on wetlands and Banjarese local wisdom. The students’ personal needs that are derived from the research is that students need supplementary materials that involve challenging activities, real-life experiences, and authentic learning opportunities that are based on Banjarese local wisdom as the information obtained from the students are the average of the students are 16 years old and most students live in Banjarmasin. For the learning needs, students indeed need the supplementary materials as they need materials that they can easily relate to and used in many settings since the supplementary materials used wetlands and Banjarese local wisdom contents that surround them.

 

Finally, it is suggested for other researchers to analyze the teachers’ and administrators' needs in addition to the students’ needs to fully complete the need analysis of the supplementary materials.
