Learning proper pronunciation is essential for EFL’s effective communication. Most recent study reveals that Mispronunciation of English fricatives is a common issue among ELS. To refine up-to-date data, the researcher decides to do preliminary study and the result encourages to conduct further research. This research is aimed to analyze the errors made by students in pronouncing fricative sounds at the initial, middle and final position and with any sounds students are usually substituting these sounds.

This research was conducted using a quantitative approach. The method of determining the sample used systematic random sampling technique, while the sample size used Slovin's Formula. The number of participants involved was 20 students. Research data were collected through a pronunciation test.

The results discovered more than half students in 2020-cohort had problems in pronunciation of fricative sounds, especially, in voiced labiodental [v] and voiced interdental [ð]. In the initial and final position, the highest error is occupied by labiodental voiced [v], and for the middle position, the highest error occurs in the inetrdetal voiced [ð]. The students substituted incorrect sounds with similar native language sounds, often devoicing vibrating sounds. These mispronunciations are interlingual errors, specifically local ones. The absence of certain sounds in their native language also influenced errors in pronouncing fricatives. To improve pronunciation, students should practice vibrating their vocal cords. The researcher encourages future research on pronunciation and its connection to various phonological processes needing further study.
