When communication takes place, there is a crucial element to be implemented called politeness. Politeness itself is used in communication to avoid offending or hurting and to show respect for other people's feelings when communication occurs. Furthermore, there are six principles called politeness maxims which have a paramount role when communication happens. The six politeness maxims consisted of (a) tact maxim (focusing on increasing other’s benefit); (b) generosity maxim (focusing on increasing oneself disadvantage); (c) approbation maxim (focusing on praising others); (d) modesty maxim (focusing on criticizing oneself); (e) agreement maxim (focusing on seeking a deal of something); and (f) sympathy maxim (focusing on showing attention to others condition). In addition, it is not only crucial in spoken communication, politeness also could be integrated into written communication. Hence, this paper aims to investigate politeness maxims appearing in novels where written communication occurs. The novel used in this study is Pulang written by Leila S. Chudori. The study itself will be using utterances spoken by the characters in Pulang as the research data. After the study was conducted, it was found that the six politeness maxims appear in the novel with 68 utterances data. The data itself consisted of the approbation maxim with 21 data, tact maxim and generosity maxim with 12 data, agreement maxim with 11 data, agreement maxim with 4 data, and sympathy maxim with 3 data.
