Vocabulary is the foundation of any language and mistakes related to vocabulary can damage communication. Willingness to communicate may be a reliable thing in mastering vocabulary. Learners with high level of willingness to communicate had more productive vocabulary knowledge than those with low level of willingness to communicate. However, only a few studies have investigated the relationship between vocabulary mastery and willingness to communicate, especially in middle schools in Indonesia. To validate the previous findings, this study aims to examine the relationship between vocabulary mastery and willingness to communicate in junior high school.

This study implemented quantitative approach and correlational design. The sample of this study employed three classes of eighth grade students SMP Negeri 2 Banjarmasin. The techniques of data collection implemented used test and questionnaire. Researcher analyzed the score questionnaire, the result are calculated, after that divided into four categories. Meanwhile, for the test researcher calculated the score, then classified into four categories. The willingness to communicate variable associated with vocabulary mastery is still very limited and requires further research.

Based on the results, a significance level of 0.730 indicates a significance level greater than 0.05. It shows the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is rejected and the null hypothesis (H0) is accepted. The study reveals a positive insignificance very weak correlation between vocabulary mastery and willingness to communicate. Statistical insignificance doesn't mean that mastery of vocabulary doesn't affect the willingness to communicate, but the effect is meaningless because it may have such a small effect. A very weak correlation means that the less predictable the relationship between the variables. English teachers should assist students in boosting their willingness to communicate by equip a lot of vocabulary for students. Further researchers need to investigate more and anticipated on the questionnaire used to investigated the similar or further topics when it deals with the different educational level to get more reliable information.
