The objective of this research isto discover the strengths and weaknesses of the English textbooks used by English teacher.Think Globally Act Locally and Effective English are chosen as the books to be analyzed as they are used in most Junior High Schools in Banjarmasin.

This is adescriptive quantitative research.This research attempts to discover the strengths and weaknesses of the English textbooks based on proposes by Nation and MacAlister. The primary instrument of this research is the researcher. Checklist is used to analyze the textbooks.

Based on the data analysis, the strengths of Think Globally Act Locally arecontent, format, and presentation aspects. While goals, sequencing, monitoring, and assessment aspects require some improvements. It is also found that the strengths of Effective English, are format and assessment aspects. The weaknesses of this textbook are presentation and monitoring aspects.

Finally, it is suggested to the English teachers to overcome the weakness of the textbooks by doing some adjustments. They are suggested to provide some more materials providing opportunity for learners to maintain interpersonal communication with other people.
