This research aims to find out
the students’ achievements in reading comprehension. This
research used a descriptive design with purposive sampling technique. The population in this
research was the eighth grade student of SMP Negeri 24 Banjarmasin in class VIII C and VIII D,
total numbers of the population are 234 students. The samples of this research are 68 students.
The data were gathered through observation, and tests.
The result showed that the both classes achieved the standard score. From the calculation
result, the score was 62.14 in pre-test and 86.28 in post-test which mean the VIII C class which
taught by using Mind Mapping successfully achieved the standard score. The achievement score
was 24.14 point. In VIII D the students which taught by using outlining successfully achieved
the standard score. From the calculation result, the score was 58.18 in pre-test and 72.72 in posttest. The achievement was 14.54 point, it means there was different achievements of both classes
in reading comprehension by the result of the test.
Finally, it is suggested to teachers to use Mind Mapping and Outlining as the techniques
to ach
ieve students’ reading comprehension and the students more conscious about the reading
strategies and utilize it in reading comprehension.
