This research is aimed to describe the use of media in teaching and learning English at SMA Negeri 1 Rantau. The research is conducted based on the fact that teaching as a foreign language is different from teaching other subjects in school. There must be problems faced by English teachers in teaching English. In many cases, English is said as a difficult subject to be learned. To overcome the problems teachers should design and prepare the lesson and the media that can be used to help the teachers overcome the problems.

To find out data about the use of media in teaching and learning English at the first year classes in SMA Negeri 1 Rantau, the researcher used some instruments; they were observation sheet for the primary data, questionnaires, and interviews for the secondary data. The observation was held for 8 meetings in two different classes. The interviews were conducted by two English teachers, and the questionnaires were distributed to 52 students from class X IPS 1 and X IPS 2.

From the data gathered, the researcher concludes that the English teachers in SMA Negeri 1 Rantau use media in teaching English even though they do not always use it. The availability of media in SMA Negeri 1 Rantau is varied but limited. The researcher suggests for school to add more media both quantity and variety. Furthermore, the researcher suggests for the teachers to use instructional media more often when taught the students.
