Personal pronoun is the word that replaces the noun. For students in seventh grade as beginner, they have problems to use personal pronouns because there are many pronouns that they do not know how to apply or determine the correct pronoun in appropriate sentence. This research is aimed to describe the students’ ability in identifying personal pronouns of the seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 24 Banjarmasin.

The research method is descriptive method and quantitative approach. The total population of this research are 230 students. By using purposive sampling, the total sample taken of this research are 58 students. The instruments are test and interview.

The result shows that the students’ ability in identifying personal pronoun is good. The mean score of the students is 76,42 that categorized into good category. The percentage of each category is 20,69% in very good category, 50% in good category, 20,69% in average category, and 8,62% in low category. Based on data collected, most of students make mistakes in determining objective pronoun and possessive pronoun in the sentence.

Based on the result, it is suggested to the students to learn more about personal pronouns, especially objective pronoun and possessive pronoun. The teacher needs to improve the way of teaching grammar to improve the students’ ability in using English pronouns wether in written or in daily conversation.
