This research is conducted to figure out the types of grammatical errors based on Dulay’s surface strategy taxonomy (1982) in students’ performance of storytelling. This research is also considered tenses as subject of analysis where the errors occurred in the form of both simple present tense and simple past tense.

The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. This research tried to identify the research problem based on the phenomena on the field. As the population of the research, there were 44 students of SMA Negeri 1 Banjarmasin incoporated in English conversation club. The subjects of this research were 10 students in English storytelling division. An observation was conducted to collect the data. Video recording was also taken during the observation to help the researcher on further analysis of the data. As the result, there were 37 errors happened during the students’ performances. The errors then classified into 4 types of errors based on Dulay’s surface strategy taxonomy (1982). The errors occurred in both simple present tense and simple past tense. There were 30 errors in the use of simple past tense and the rest happened in the use of simple present tense. Most of the errors happened because the lack of knowledge of the subjects.

The findings of this research revealed all errors elaborated in Dulay’s surface strategy taxonomy (1982) involve omission, addition, misformation, and misordering happen during the performances of the students in English storytelling. In addition, the errors occur in both simple present tense and simple past tense. In advance, it is suggested for further research to use different taxonomy in analyzing the errors occurred in speaking activity.
