Speaking is one of the four language skills that have to be mastered by the learners in learning English. In this research, descriptive text about places is used as the material in learning speaking. Descriptive text is a functional text that describe about person appearances, animals, and places. This research is aimed to describe the speaking achievement of the students who were at grade VIII of SMP Negeri 10 Banjarmasin in academic year 2017/2018. By using cluster random sampling, 32 of 207 students were chosen to be the sample of this research. Then, the data was analysed by descriptive qualitative approach.The result of the research showed that the students’ speaking achievement of VIII grade of SMP Negeri 10 Banjarmasin is described based on speaking components. The result showed that the students' pronunciation, intonation, fluency, and comprehension were in fair category. Based on the result, the researcher suggested that the students to learn speaking better using any techniques variation, and hopefully the teacher support it by implementing techniques during the teaching speaking process. Also, the researcher expects that the nect researcher who want to use this research as a referent point, to explore more information about the speaking achievement.
