Tone and mood are part of reading comprehension. Tone is the attitude of the author toward the subject and characters of a story. A reader can only identify the tone of the passage through the author’s choices of words. Mood is the feeling the reader gets from a story. Mood can be determined through languages between the characters, setting, plot, and atmosphere of the story. The problem of this study is focused on the students’ ability in identifying the tone and mood of a passage. In this study, the researcher is interested in conducting a research about identifying tone and mood by the English department students of Lambung Mangkurat University. The purpose of this research is to find out the ability of the students of English Department in Lambung Mangkurat University batch 2016. This research used descriptive quantitative method. The instrument of this research was test. The test was multiple choice questions that consist of 50 items. The samples of this research were 73 students from English department of Lambung Mangkurat University batch 2016. The result of this research showed that the ability of the students of English Department batch 2016 in identifying the tone and mood of a passage were categorized as fair. The highest score was 88 and the lowest score was 20. The average score was 60.93. Based on the result, it is suggested for students to learn more about the tone and mood of a passage. Besides, the teacher should give the students more exposure about tone and mood of a passage in the reading classroom.
