Translation has played a center in human interaction. The process of translation does not only translate words, but also consider the element and meaning from source language (SL) into target language (TL). Before conducting translation, a translator needs to master both the source and the target language well, and then decide which technique that will be used to translate the text.

The objective of this research is to describe the techniques used in translating a narrative text from English entitled “Two Travelers and a Big Tree” into Indonesian language by the English department students of LambungMangkurat University batch 2015 academic year 2018/2019. In this research, the researcher analyzed the techniques by using qualitative approach. The data were taken from 40 students’ translation of narrative text using purposive sampling technique.

The result showed that the students used all of translation techniques proposed by VinayandDarbelnet (1995). From 21 sentences of SL narrative text, it is found that the students used literal translationthe most. The frequency of translation technique of literal translation occurs 378 times followed by modulation occurs 125 times, Equivalence occurs 116 times, Transposition occurs 95 times, Adaptation 66 times, Borrowing 36 occurs times  and calque occurs 24 times.

Based on the result above, it is suggested that the lecturer of translation can usethis as reference to improve knowledge about the translation material. The English department students also can choose wisely the translation techniques to do the translation task to produce a good and comprehensible translation. In addition, the next researcher can conduct more detail research in the future related to translation especially translation techniques.
