Pronunciation is very important in language learning and has
significance position in determining the meaning; however pronunciation
problem usually occurs in learning a foreign language. This research has
purpose to describe the problems which are faced by English Department
Students Batch 2014 of LambungMangkurat University in pronouncing
English segmental and suprasegmental features.
This descriptive study uses total sampling 50 subjects of English
Department Students Batch 2014 of LambungMangkurat University as the
sample. The instrument itself is in a form of test.
The result of this research is there are significant problems of segmental
features faced by English department students batch 2014 of
LambungMangkurat University: students mispronounce some English vowels
such as /U?/, /??/, consonants of /g/ and /?/ and significant problems of
suprasegmental features such as elision and assimilation.
Based on the research result, the researcher suggests: 1) The lecture
should drill and practice relating to English pronunciation, especially of
segmental features such as vowels /U?/, /??/ and consonants of /g/ and /?/. Also
they should have given more acknowledgement on suprasegmental features
since there are also significant problems suchas : elision and assimilation. 2)
The further research in higher level education can be conducted in order to
enrich English pronunciation knowledge and be pronunciation teaching
guidance. 3) Increasing the awareness of suprasegmental features which also
play an important roles as much as segmental features in determining the
meaningful or the goal of communication.
