The objective of this research is to analyze the kinds of grammatical errors in writing essay made by English Department students of Lambung Mangkurat University batch 2015. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The sample of this research is two classes of academic writing. The classes are chosen by using cluster random sampling. In obtaining the data, the researcher used writing test as the research instrument. Based on the result of the test, it was found that based there were four categories of errors made by the students in essay. The errors were classified based on the surface strategy taxonomy proposed by Dulay et al. They are omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The result of the study shows that students’ errors are dominated by omission, followed by misformation, addition, and misordering. The errors made by students are mostlyon the omission in auxiliary verb. Therefore, it is suggested that the lecturers should focus on giving feedback on students’ writing as well as communicating students’ progress in writing.
