            The  objective of this research was to analyze the grammatical errors made by the third grade of SMPN 13 Banjarmasin. This research was conducted by using quantitative approach. The design of this research was descriptive. It used cluster purposive sampling technique. The instrument was writing test, the students were asked to write recount text in 50-100 words. The test was conducted for two times. The errors were categorized based on surface strategy taxonomy by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982). They were omission, addition, misformation, and misordering.

The result of the study showed that the total errors was 109 grammatical errors. The highest error on the misformation was 54 errors or 49.54%, followed by omission 41 errors or 37.62%, addition 10 errors or 9.17%, and the lowest error was misordering 4 errors or 3.67%.

            Based on the research results, there were some suggestions given which are, misformation was the highest number of errors in this research, the error occurred since students still did not understand with the rule or the usage in forming simple past sentence. The students need more practice in writing language use components such as in tense, word orders, and complex construction. And the students should understand about the grammatical features of recount text. The other researchers can used the result of this study as the background to decide the best method in learning English.
