This research aims to find out whether there is any difference on students‘ writing ability 

taught by Guiding Question Technique and those who are taught by using Mind Mapping.The 

subjects of this research were the eighth grade students in the second semester of SMP Negeri 31 

Banjarmasin.The Experimental class was VIII C. They were taught by using Guiding Question 

Technique. The control class was VIII E which were taught by using mind mapping. Based on 

the calculation, the experimental class got the average score 26.19 in pre-test and got 82.87 in the 

post-test. The control class got 30.78 in the pre-test and got 74.72 in the post-test. The 

calculation of the t-test showed t-value was greater than t-table (4.32>2.00) at the significance 

level of 5%. Furthermore, the use of Guiding Question Technique was more effective in teaching 

writing recount text to the eighth grade students of SMP N 31 Banjarmasin.

Based on the research result, the researcher suggests the English teacher to use Guiding 

Question as the alternative technique in teaching writing.
