This thesis is aimed to describe the ability in reading comprehension of English
Department Students batch 2015 of Lambung Mangkurat University. This research uses
descriptive quantitative method. The populations in this research are 80 students and total
samples are 72 students who are taken by using purposive sampling. In collecting the
data, the researcher uses objective test which covered four skills in reading
comprehension. This research uses test re-test technique to ensure the reliability of the
instrument. The validity of the test used in this study is content validity. From the
research result, the data analysis show there are 11 students (15.27%) who have
outstanding ability, 2 students (2.77%) who have excellent ability, 1 student (1.38%) who
have very good ability, 10 students (13.88%) who have good ability, 17 students
(23.61%) who have above average ability, 19 students (26.38%) who have average
ability, 10 students (13.88%) who have borderline ability, 1 student (1.38%) who have
weak ability and 1 student (1.38%) who have poor ability in reading comprehension. In
general, it is found that the ability level of most of the students who are taking Reading
III is average. Based on research results, it is suggested for the students to keep learning
and practicing their reading comprehension ability to enhance their vocabulary in order to
help them to have better understanding when reading.
