Teaching reading in English is not easy as most people think. There are several factors that influence the success of teaching and learning activity from the techniques in teaching reading. They are teaching techniques used by the teachers to the students. The problem of this research was focused on techniques in teaching reading by teacher. Descriptive qualitative was used in this study. Observation and interview were applied to collect the data needed. Moreover, there are two English teachers of eleventh grade students at SMKN 4 Banjarmasin were taken as sample.The findings showed that there were seven techniques applied by the teacher in teaching reading. The techniques were Reading Aloud, KWLH, Dictation, Think-Pair-Share, 3E and Question and Answer Exercise. The techniques mostly used by the teachers were Reading Aloud, 3E and Question and Answer Exercise.It is suggested that the teacher use the techniques not only in while-activity but also in every activities stage such as; in pre-activity and post-activity. The teachers can use activating prior knowledge and predicting in pre-activity to help students successfully comprehend a new text and get the students thinking about the topic before they read the reading material. The teachers also can use questions in post-activity to improve students’ comprehension about reading material.
