Vocabulary is one of the important factors in language teaching. It is one of language
components that supports the students in learning a language. In fact, the researcher found
out there were some students who had difficulties in learning vocabulary. The reason why
students still consider having difficulties in vocabulary is because their learning motivation is
low. Some students said that uninteresting way of teaching made them feeling bored and
losing their concentration. These reasons led the researcher used Crossword Puzzle and Word
Search in teaching vocabulary to enhance their vocabulary achievement.
This research aims to find out whether there are significant effects of vocabulary
achievement between students who are taught by using Crossword Puzzle and those who are
taught by using Word Search at tenth grade students of SMKN 4 Banjarmasin in the
academic year 2016/2017. In this research, the researcher uses quasi-experimental design.
The result showed that both classes gained enhancement on their vocabulary achievement.
The average score of students’ test results in experimental class was 64.31 and after three
times treatments, their average score enhance to 80.48. Meanwhile, in control class their
average score enhance from 61.26 to 74.28.
Based on the calculation of t-test, it was found that the result of t
observed is 2.30262 for
significant level 5%. The result then being compared with t
table (tt), where the value of ttable for
df 68 is 1.9955 so, t
o > tt = 2.30262 > 1.9955. It showed that the tobserved was higher than ttable.
The result of the testing hypothesis by using t-test formula determined that the alternative
hypothesis (H
a) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected.
Based on the research results obtained, the researcher recommends to the English
teachers especially in SMKN 4 Banjarmasin to use Crossword Puzzle in teaching vocabulary
to make students more active and enjoyable the teaching activities.
