In this research, the researcher aims to find out whether there is any significant difference in students’ writing achievement between students who are taught by using listing technique and students who are taught by using mind-mapping technique at tenth grade students of SMAN 2 Kandangan in the academic year of 2016/2017. Therefore, the researcher employed quasi-experimental study and took class X IS 1 (experimental group) and X IS 2 (control group), totally 34 students as the sample. In collecting data, the researcher used writing test and questionnaire.
The findings of the research show that there is significant difference in students’ writing achievement of students who are taught by using listing technique and students who are taught by using mind-mapping technique. The t-test calculation showed that the value of t-test is 4.5 which is higher than the t-table (2.00). It means Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. The average scores of pre-test and post-test of both groups showed some improvements. The use of listing and mind-mapping technique in teaching learning recount text help students to improve their writing ability.
However, experimental group that uses listing as technique has higher improvement than the control group that uses mind-mapping technique. There are some reasons why it happened. First, listing technique is easier to be used by the students. The students are given freedom to develop their ideas. Second, in using listing technique, the students are allowed to write words, phrases, or sentences, while in mind-mapping technique the students are only allowed to write words or phrases. Since listing technique is easier to be used, the students can understand about recount text better with the help of this technique. In addition, in experimental group the students show bigger interest in learning new technique than in control group.
Therefore, it is suggested for all English teachers to use listing and mind-mapping technique as one of the alternative techniques, especially in teaching and learning writing recount text, which can be used to help the students to improve their writing ability.
