Keywords: Speed Reading, Skimming Technique, Scanning Technique

Skimming and scanning are reading techniques that use rapid eye movement and keywords to move quickly through text for slightly different purposes. Skimming is reading rapidly in order to get a general overview of the material. Scanning is reading rapidly in order to find specific facts. While skimming tells the readers what general information is within a section, scanning helps the readers locate a particular fact.

The purpose of this research is to find out the use of skimming and scanning techniques employed by the English Department students who are taking Reading II course and to find out the problems of skimming and scanning techniques employed by them. The subjects of the research are the Reading II course students in academic year 2014/2015. The techniques of data collection used for obtaining the data are test, questionnaire and interview session.

The findings of this research show that skimming and scanning are the important techniques to be learned in reading class. The subjects used scanning technique by reading each question completely before starting to scan the text. Then, they chose the keywords from the question itself and searched that keyword in the text. While, the use of skimming technique employed by the subject was they quickly went through the text in a few minutes, and determined the overall text and a few key points. After finding the key points, they tried to conclude the main idea and found the right answer. The problems faced by the students in using skimming and scanning techniques were (a) lack of background knowledge of the use of the techniques, (b) many new vocabularies in a text, and (c) limited time.

Based on the findings, it is suggested for the lecturer to teach speed reading techniques. It is suggested for the students to have strategy in reading and to use it so that they can comprehend the text in efficient time. Also, it is suggested to other researcher to use skimming and scanning techniques in other research because these techniques are important for students in reading a text.
