Structure is a supporting component to learn English, and one of its parts is
morphological inflection that is important to express time, as a definite point or a period which
is basic expression in English. This research tried to identify the English morphological
inflection error types made by the first year students of SMK Telkom Banjarbaru.
The research method used descriptive method and qualitative approach. The
population was 252 students. The sample taken was 108 students and the sampling technique
was purposive sampling. The instruments used in this research were test and interview.
The result showed that the types of inflection morphological error that first year
students made were possessive inflection errors with (390 or 24.47%), progressive inflection
errors with (377 or 23.65%), third person singular inflection errors with (338 or 21.20%), past
tense inflection error with (309 or 19.38%), and the last was plural inflection errors (180 or
11.29%).
Based on the research result, it is suggested that the teacher should give a special
attention to the students’ grammar difficulties especially in English morphological inflection
in their teaching activity to anticipate the errors in the future. For the students, they should
learn from the errors that they have made so that repeating the same errors in the future can be
avoided and also practicing by themselves not only relying to the teacher.
